Advanced Placement (AP) Math is fast paced as it combines three years of mathematics into two school years. 7th grade AP Math will cover all of the 7th grade Common Core standards as well as half of the 8th grade standards. 8th grade AP Math will cover all of the Algebra 1 Common Core standards as well as the other half of the 8th grade standards.
The following is given to 6th & 7th grade math students at the end of the school year to take home for their parents to sign and return to the teacher. It describes what to expect from 7th & 8th grade AP math. (Wording may have changed some from year to year)
7th/8th Grade Advanced Placement (AP) Math
AP math combines three years of mathematics into two school years. 7th grade AP math will cover all of the 7th grade Common Core standards as well as half of the 8th grade standards. 8th grade AP math will cover half of the 8th grade standards as well as all of the Algebra 1 standards. Therefore, students signing up for 8th grade AP math should have completed 7th grade AP math. AP math allows students to take Calculus in high school. Taking Calculus in high school is not a pre-requisite to success in college.
This is a FAST PACED course. To be successful in this course, students should have mastered all of the general math concepts and be able to comprehend new math concepts quickly. Students should be prepared to have homework often and have a good attendance record. Students who are absent, even if it is excused, may have difficulty keeping up. To be in this class it is recommended that your child meet the following criteria: 1) Have at least an 85 yearly average in their current math class, 2) Have a Global Scholar score of at least 2701 for upcoming 7th graders and at least 2759 for upcoming 8th graders.
The form then lists the student's name, math average, and Global Scholar score. It gives a place to select standard or advanced and for the parent/guardian to sign. Every student in AP math signed up for it using this form.
