I cannot say how proud I am of my students! They have accomplished so much during this project! When I look at how they have grown and all they have learned and all they have done for our classroom, school, and community, I beam with pride. It makes me even more proud of them that they have made commitments to projects beyond the deadline; they are still going to check in with the kindergarten class that they adopted and offer prize; they are still going to run the recycling program; they are still going to keep working to reduce our carbon footprint. I cannot believe how much this project has changed how we think in my classroom.

Charcoal has many purposes, one of which being making red meat better for the environment. "There are more than 1.4 billion cattle in the world today, and all together they release 65% of all greenhouse gases from livestock,"(Mikki Cusack). Biochar is one way of farming that uses charcoal and reduces the greenhouse gasses that come from cattle. In 2012, a research group in Vietnam found that adding 0.5-1% biochar to cattle's feed reduced methane emissions by more than 10%. Given that methane makes up 90% of greenhouse gas emissions from cattle farming this could cut cattleās environmental footprint by a very high percentage.

Old Chico Road and have split into committees. I'm in the recycling group and we are making recycling bins. They look so good. We are hoping that people will use them.

Sierra view has been wanting to get a water bottle refiller at school but then they found a website that will give us a water refillable station for half the price! Then Miss Akimoto's class found out that they have been wanting to buy a water refillable station so with the leftover money that we had won we used it to buy the water refillable station for the school

I was waiting for Miss Akimoto to finish talking to someone in the office and I heard something rolling around outside the door and I looked, it was a slime container. So I walked outside and walked over to the slime container and I picked it up and put it in the recycling. I would have done nothing 2 weeks ago but now that I know how bad it is for our planet I picked it up and I hope you would do the same.

First, we made an Old Chico Road group of a few kids who wanted to make the music video. We met at lunch for about 2 weeks and at the end we started singing our new lyrics with the whole class. Next, we decided that we would start filming and heard the news that we were going to the Chico State recording studio (Special thanks to Chico State!) to record our song. After that we started filming the scenes. One of the first scenes was the Tesla scene, then bikes, and so on. Then it was time for the fun singing part. After school, we went to the recording studio. Half of the class recorded, then the other half. We did this twice each and got to listen in the control room and dance quietly. Then at the end, we started post production and finished the video. And that is how we made Old Chico Road.

Sustainable agriculture is a type of farming that makes better soil, is better for the environment and helps our water. The movie, The Littlest Big Farm ( which is about a real farm) uses this type of farming on their 100% sustainable and environmentally safe farm. It also affects the air and makes it better.

We have been working on our project for a couple months now. I was so surprised by the project that my students picked this year! They are tackling something so big and so relevant, but watching them learn and be enthusiastic about the change that they are making makes me feel so inspired as a teacher.
In December when we really tried to whittle down our project, it looked like we were going to go a completely different direction. Then one of my students said that he had learned about climate change and wanted to do something about it. He had talked with his mom and she had used the "Old Town Road:" music video as an example-- what if we don't do anything and we found a portal to the future and it was awful?! That is what sparked the idea of making a music video to teach about what we learned and to make a fun way to educate others.
The kids have been working so hard every day. They have broken into committees and each are coming up with actions to make our school and community more sustainable to protect our water.
I can't wait to see what they end up doing!
