Wellbeing

At Chewton Primary School we believe wellbeing is just as important as academic achievement. When children are supported to be confident, resilient and have a strong belief in themselves they can thrive in their learning.

We are committed to providing a safe, secure, and stimulating learning environment for all students. We understand that students reach their full potential only when they are happy, healthy, and safe. A positive school culture helps to engage students and support them in their learning. Our school acknowledges that student wellbeing and student learning outcomes are closely linked.

Chewton Primary School has developed a range of strategies to promote engagement, positive behaviour and respectful relationships for all students in our school. Sometimes students may need extra social, emotional or educational support at school, and their needs will change over time as they grow and learn.

Chewton Primary School is fortunate to be part of the Mental Health In Primary School Pilot (MHIPS) — a new model of school mental health support that was rolled out in 2020. The project trains experienced teachers to become Mental Health and Wellbeing Coordinators in primary schools. Our current dedicated Health and Wellbeing Coordinator is Margot Feast.

The Centre for Community Child Health at Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI), along with partners at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education and the Victorian Department of Education, developed the MHiPS project to help build the capacity of Victorian primary schools to support the mental health and wellbeing of students.

It is based on research that shows when children are taught social, emotional, and behavioural skills at a young age, there is a positive effect in how they problem solve and interact with their peers later in life.

Through Kimochis your child will learn how to:
