art and music

Every child is considered an artist at Chewton Primary School. We live in a vibrant and creative community and this is reflected in our art classes.

Students have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of arts mediums and materials, including using pottery wheels, clay, painting, fibre arts, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.  We are also fortunate to have our school surrounded by the natural environment. We are often found exploring and creating in the bush, responding to the natural environment.

In the art room we value process over product and a Teaching for Artistic Behaviours approach (TAB).  This means that students experience art class as artists responsible for their own learning. Students are introduced to media where they then advance their individual artistic processes through exploration and discovery, inquiry, skill development and art making, reflection and self-evaluation.

The Resonance String Orchestra recently spent time at Chewton Primary School, playing music and working with our students. The gift of collaboration through music and art for our students has been extraordinary.  Students were invited to respond creatively to the music they heard with depth and focus through drawing and nature sculptures. This collaboration has fostered connections for students to their wider creative community and has assisted in growing their understanding of how creativity in different mediums can be a valuable tool in furthering their connections to Country.

We're also greateful to have Scott Anderson as a private in-house music teacher for drums, keyboard, voice and guitar.
