Chewton
primary school
We are a small school 5kms east of Castlemaine, Victoria. Our heritage building and stunning bush setting make our school both a welcoming and unique learning environment. Our school grounds offer a music garden, interpretative play space, outdoor stage, cubby building area, oval, playground equipment, quiet spaces and a wood-fired oven. We make use of the bush behind the school for learning activities and regular family cook ups.
Chewton Primary was recently nominated for a National Reconciliation Award and we are incredibly proud to have our Reconciliation Action Plan published by Narragunnawali. We are also the proud recipients of the Victorian Sustainability 2023 ResourceSmart Schools Award for curriculum leadership. In 2024 we won the Victorian School of the Year in the Resource Smart Sustainability awards.

Congratulations Chewton Primary School for outstanding achievement in Sustainability.
This School's award nominated Reconciliation Action Plan shows its strong bond with the community. Its Koorie Engagement Support Officer, Djaara elder Aunty Kerri, along with Kath Coff from Nalderun Aboriginal Education Corporation work with staff to ensure First Nations perspectives and pedagogy are part of the school program. In 2023 the school introduced a weekly sustainability class for the entire school. Students participate in Connectin Country workshops where they learn about biodiversity.
The school cares for its nearby reserve and Forest Creek. Students collaborate with Post Office Hill Action Group on revegetation projects.
Students launched a Dog Poop Protest to educate walkers around Forest Creek about the danger of leaving dog poo near the waterway. This mission was later supported by Parks Victoria. In 2023 and 2024 over 300 people joined the school's Reconciliation Walk, where this 3 star school showed its strong environmental leadership.
