LITERACY

At Chewton we strive for authenticity in our Literacy activities. We have writers who are writing to a real reader and readers who are reading what a writer wrote. Students read authentic texts for authentic purposes and also read for enjoyment.

Students are supported in the early years with phonics work and to develop a range of decoding strategies. Fluency, Accuracy, Expression, Vocabulary and Comprehension are all integral parts of our Reading program across all year levels. Reading conferences and Readers Notebooks are important teaching and learning tools throughout the school.

Proficient readers have clear goals. They are active, thoughtful and strategic. They make predictions, make connections and make inferences. Our school is a vibrant reading community where students are supported to really develop independence and enjoyment as readers.

At Chewton Primary we are all writers. We use Writer’s Notebooks and we practice the skills of writing through the Workshop Model. Writing at Chewton is reflective, creative and personal.

We teach the writing process as students compose texts with a genre focus. We build vocabulary awareness and teach the evidence based six plus one writing traits, a proven framework for building writing capacity.

We aim to nurture a passion for writing and written expression. Our students past and present have won awards for their writing and some can even say they are published authors.
