ChatGPT Homework Help

While of course we don't want anyone using ChatGPT or other AI tools to do students' work for them, these tools can be enormously helpful as personalized "tutors."

*Note: AI tools can make mistakes! Use them as supplements to your at-home learning but not as authoritative sources.*

Guide for Parent Use

Examples of useful prompts:

"Can you help my 5th grader understand the concept of improper fractions?"

"My 8th grade student is studying for a Geography test. Can you help her create a study schedule?"

"Here's an Algebra problem my high school has the answer to but still doesn't quite understand. Can you explain the process?" (Tip: this is MUCH easier with a tool that will evaluate visual data. ChatGPT4, for example, will allow you to upload a picture of the text.)

Guide for Student Use

For helping your student determine when and how to use AI tools for their work, consider the spectrum of use. It is always unacceptable for students to use AI generated work with no input. It is typically unrealistic (especially for high school students) to avoid AI or internet tools altogether (this includes spell check, grammar checking tools, predictive text, etc). However,  various assigments may lend themselves to a varety of opportunities to utilize technology tools appropriately. In general, students are encouraged to regard the use of AI tools similarly to the way they regard human help. If it would be appropriate to allow a peer or a parent to offer suggestions or corrections, they may use AI or other internet tools for the same thing. In addition, there are some assignments that would allow the use of design tools or other specialized apps - in those cases, it would also be appropriate to use AI to assist in the same way.
