The Career and Technical Education courses offer students at W. F. West the opportunity to explore and prepare for post-secondary programs through community/technical or four year colleges. A sequence of courses can provide students with entry-level employment skills for internships, apprenticeships and preparation for industry certification. All CTE courses listed meet the Career and Technical education credit requirements for graduation. Courses identified as Occupational meet the state requirement for graduation.
Several certificates of proficiency are offered. Graduating seniors who have met the coursework requirements listed for each certificate and have met the grade point average requirements may apply for a certificate(s). It is the responsibility of the student to select courses in the certificate area. The instructor in charge of each program should be consulted regularly by the student to assure that requirements are met. As the student advances in the program, the teacher may also act as an advisor regarding questions or concerns. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the student to apply for the certificate with the advising teacher in a timely manner as graduation approaches.
All certificates require six semester classes. Application for a certificate is completed in May of the senior year. Please check the school website for exact due dates and printable application forms. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA within all certificate courses, and a 2.3 GPA in all high school classes. Midterm grades will be used for GPA calculations for courses taken during spring semester of the senior year. Students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement using midterm grades may still earn a certificate, but will not be included in the graduation program.
Information on individual program requirements and advising teachers can be found in the counseling center, or by following the certificate of proficiency link at the W. F. West website.
