When students do not adhere to our S.W.I.M behavior expectations (Stay safe. Work hard. Include everyone. Make responsible choices), they will face a series of consequences. Natural consequences will be used where appropriate and as much as possible. Based on the P.B.I.S. philosophy, we spend time instructing students on the choices they make. The following discipline management techniques may be used alone or in combination depending on the nature of the behavior.
- Use of Restorative Practices & Circles
- Verbal warning
- Written reflection about the incident
- Cool off time or Time Out
- Seating change within the classroom
- Written warning
- Written notification to parent /guardian
- Conference with parent/guardian
- Assignment of school duties such as cleaning or picking up litter
- Office referral
- In-school suspension
- Short-term suspension (5 days or less)
- Long-term suspension (more than 5 days)
- Expulsion from school
Process by which discipline issues are handled
- When an office referral is brought to the office, an administrator or the administrator’s designee investigates the issue.
- A parent will be notified by telephone or a letter, once the investigation is complete. (Sometimes an investigation may not be completed in one school day due to when the incident occurred and how many students it involves.)
- If a child has a persistent issue with a particular behavior, an intervention will be put in place to assist the student in this area.
- When bullying has been determined by administration, it will be referred to the Guidance Counselor and/or Social Worker to provide a targeted intervention for the victim and perpetrator.
