Projects

Chatham Reads participates in a variety of community activities and projects.  See a short description of our current and previous events below.

Summer Reading Challenge "Reach 20"-  The summer learning challenge is designed to encourage students to read during the summer months to prevent summer learning loss.  Students can earn prizes from local businesses if they meet their summer learning goals.

Lending Libraries: Chatham Reads partnered with the Chatham Literacy Council to place eight small structures housing books available for free to members of the community. We have placed these lending libraries in eight locations throughout Chatham County.  All Chatham County residents are encouraged to visit these lending libraries where they can take a book, leave a book, or both. The books placed in these libraries represent a variety of reading levels and range from board books to the latest bestsellers. These little libraries are helping us make strides to ensure that all Chatham County residents have access to books.  (Read MORE...)

Books on Break- Since 2015 The Chatham Education Foundation has sponsored Chatham Reads in a program called Books on Break. Students are able to shop for and receive new and gently used books to take home for the summer.

Book Drives- Each year Chatham Reads sponsors book drives to gather books for various Chatham Reads projects.  We use the gently used books to fill book baskets, little libraries, and to provide books to students in the community. If you wish to donate books, feel free to contact us. If you would like to sponsor a Chatham Reads Book Drive, click here to access book drive support materials. In 2017 Chatham Reads collected over 5000 books!

Day of the Books-  Chatham Reads participates in the Day of the Books each year.  This is a fun-filled event sponsored by Childcare Networks celebrating the love of reading. Participants can enjoy music, books, story time, free books, lunch, and other fantastic activities.

Book Baskets-  In 2016, Chatham Reads placed 50 book baskets throughout Chatham County in restaurants, doctors offices, community service facilities, and other locations where children would be waiting. Chatham Reads replenishes these baskets as needed.
