An increasing Risk 

A food allergy is a reaction from the immune system after eating a particular food.1 Cases of allergies have been increasing especially among children. In fact, 4-8% percent of children have food allergies, and cases of peanut allergies are the most common.4 For this reason, we chose to focus on peanut allergies. We know how peanut allergies can become a real struggle for the families and children involved, increasing their anxiety level.6 

We believe that education is an excellent intervention to fight against prejudices. With the increase of misinformation on the internet, we believe that children must have reliable sources of information about the danger of peanuts allergies and other health-related conditions.  

Facts about Allergies and Children 

• 4%-8% of children affected by food allergies 

• 90% of food allergies are cow’s milk, egg, soy, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish

• Peanut allergies come in early life and normally do not go away in adulthood

• People who have peanut allergies react to even a crumb of peanut, and those who are highly allergic reaction to even smaller traces of peanuts

• Peanut allergies are diagnosed through a skin prick test or fluoroenzyme immunoassay

• Symptoms can be shown in 1 minute or a few hours after ingestion

An innovating solution 

In order to accomplish our mission, we decided to build an interactive Storybook on Peanuts Allergies. Here is why your project is the perfect solution to our mission:

• A study done by Dr.Horowitz-Kraus and Dr.Hutton in 2018 explains that brain connectivity in children increases when they read books but decreases when exposed to screen-based media.6 

• Research shows that Active learning styles are more effective than passive learning styles.4

• Online learning motivates children to learn independently and is better for children with hearing disabilities. 4

• Learning through games provides challenges, feedback, rewards, and engagement.
