Postsecondary Options
Don't wait until end of senior year to begin your planning. Know the types of jobs that interest you and the skills/ training required. Begin building a resume along with a list of references. Practice interview techniques. Volunteer or work part-time to gain experience and make connections. If a manufacturing career interests you, check out AWT's Work Advance Program.
Apprenticeships allow you to earn an income while learning on the job at a sponsor company and receiving free in-class training. Search opportunities at:
Local union sites, like CBCTC (construction trades) and IBEW 673 (electrical)
On traditional job sites like Indeed or Simply Hired
The military offers many career options spanning all 16 career clusters within its five branches. You can enlist in the military after high school graduation. To become an officer, a four-year degree is typically required. Options include military service academies, ROTC programs, and Officer Candidate/Training schools. Career technical education (CTE) programs are usually one year or less and relatively low-cost. They typically result in a certification or licensure for a technical job in a highly-specified field such as LPN, EMT, electrician, or cosmetologist. Local institutions with postsecondary CTE programs include Auburn Career Center, Lakeland, Tri-C, and the Kent Geauga/Twinsburg and Kent Ashtabula branch campuses.
