Philippines Service Learning (Middle School and Upper School) organized the Food Waste Action Week from March 18 to 22. The week was a resounding success, thanks to the incredible enthusiasm and participation of students, faculty, staff, and parents alike.
During the week, we witnessed firsthand the power of collective action in addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time: food waste. Together, we engaged in various activities aimed at raising awareness, inspiring behavioral change, and planning for practical solutions to minimize food waste within our school and beyond.
One of our activities required participation from the teachers. Along with some of our club members, teachers were given a "Zero Food Waste" T-shirt hand-designed by our students to wear during lunchtime. Their task was to go around the cafeteria during lunchtime to remind and watch over the students so they do not leave unnecessary food waste.
We also conducted a poll using stickers throughout the week. These questions intended to find out what the problem was within the Chadwick community that had been contributing to food waste production. Below are the results:
With the collected information, members of the Philippines Service Learning are planning to submit a proposal to the school cafeteria to reduce the amount of food waste generated.
Additionally, we collaborated with three Village School students who took the same initiative. We had an opportunity to have a discussion with them, talk about what our motives were, and what we can do in the future together.
Below is the progress that we made throughout the week. Both Middle school and Upper school students counted the number of empty plates generated during the week.
As we celebrate the achievements of the past week, it is crucial to recognize that our journey towards zero food waste does not end here. Instead, it marks the beginning of a sustained effort to integrate mindful consumption practices into our daily lives and foster a culture of sustainability within our community.
Thank you everyone for your active participation, and we hope everyone continues to become food heroes.
