This year, we will continue to focus on the art standards as designated by the Cedar Grove curriculum as well as the National Art Education Standards.
They include:
Creating : Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work, organizing and developing artistic ideas and work, refining and completing artistic ideas and work
Presenting: Select, analyze and interpret artistic work for presentation, develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation, convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work
Responding: Perceive and analyze artistic work, interpret intent and meaning in artistic work, apply criteria to evaluate artistic work
Connecting: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art, relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding
I will incorporate all of these standards into my art lessons. All students will explore a variety of medium, as well as the techniques and usage of materials conducive to creating an important artwork. I strive to provide an environment which is safe and comfortable for all students to take risks to ensure success.
We have kindergarten volunteer parents ( who are greatly appreciated!) as well as parent volunteers in third grade during my kachina unit. Music is played in the art room and each child will have the great responsibility of being a "table captain" several times a year. This method of putting the responsibility of "clean up" back to the children has been most effective. Quiet discussion is allowed in the art room and mutual respect is displayed by all.
Projects that I've chosen have been well researched, utilizing the standards listed above. I expect a great deal from my students and am always thrilled with the results! We certainly have talented artists in our schools!
Please be sure to visit ongoing displays of students artwork in the Municipal Building, the Cedar Grove Library and the Board of Education offices.
