Lesson 1- Citizens in a Community

community- a group of people who live or work together. It is also the place where people live

citizen- a person who lives in and belongs in a community

right- a freedon to make their own choices

responsibility- something that a person should take care of or do

law- a rule that people in a community must follow

consequence- something the happens because of what a person does


Lesson 2- Government for the People

government- the group of citizens that runs a community, state, or country

judge- the leader of a court

government service- a service that a government provides for citizens (example: police department, fire department)

tax- money paid to the government and used to pay for services


Lesson 3- Our Leaders

election- a time when people vote for their leaders. The election to choose the President is held in November

Mayor- the leader of a city or town government. The mayor makes important decisions for our community.

Governor- the leader of a state's government. Every state has a Governor

President- the leader of the United States government

Vote- a choice that gets counted. Every person's vote is important in an election.

Ballot- A list of all the choices for voting.

Lesson 4- Our Country's Government

Capitol- a city in which a state's or country's government meets and works. Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States.

Congress- a group of citizens chosen to make decisions for our country. Congress votes on new laws.

Supreme Court- the court that decides on laws for the United States

Consititution- A written set of rules that the government must follow. Our Constitution says that every adult citizen has the right to vote

Lesson 5- Community and State Governments

Council- a group of citizens choosen to make decisions for all people

Legislature- a group of citizens chosen to make decisions for a state
