6th Grade Writing Rules

All paragraphs must contain 7-9 sentences.

Indent all paragraphs.

Start each sentence in a paragraph with a different word.

Do not use contractions.

Use transitions to introduce each new detail (2-3 per paragraph…You have a copy of the transition handout!)

Do not use abbreviations--All words should be written out.

Do not use symbols.

Never use “firstly” as a transition—instead use “first of all.”

Do not skip lines between paragraphs.

Do not use slang.

Do not begin a sentence with a coordinating conjunction (and, but, so…).

Stay on topic.

Use complete sentences. No run-ons or fragments!

Start all sentences with a capital letter.

Remember capitalization rules.

Write out all numbers less than 10.

When typing, use size 12 Times New Roman font and double space.

Do not change point of view.

Do not change tense—past or present, not both!

Follow punctuation rules.

Spelling counts!

Acronym Rule: The first time you use the name, write it out. After that, you may use the acronym.

Vary sentence structure (simple, compound, complex).

Do not use parentheses to explain! Write a clear sentence instead!

Do not begin sentences with question words unless you are asking a question! (what, who, when, where, why, how)
