• Build a deeper mathematical understanding of the big ideas surrounding the unit.
• Explore appropriate resources.
• Plan meaningful instruction.
• Collaborate with grade-level colleagues.
We will start by going over our daily outcomes, establishing norms for the group, reviewing the agenda, and choosing one math joke from the jar!
We will build common understanding by examining the big mathematical ideas of the unit we are focusing and will create a concept map. After discussing the big mathematical ideas, we will review the TEKS, district standards, and concept vocabulary. We will rewrite the standards using “I can” statements.
We will discuss a specific math concept in detail by exploring what math strategies we will use to teach it, what misconceptions the students might have, how we can modify the content, and identify teacher moves/ questions to ask the students.
We will explore the big picture ideas, work together to explore math tasks that are open-ended, engaging and fun, and discuss how these would work best for students.
We will go through any district created assessments, STAAR released questions, and/or create our own assessment questions for the unit. We will explore each question in the point of view as a student and as a teacher to identify and reflect potential misconcepts that students might have. We will determine which questions best assess students' understanding of the concepts, as we create/modify formative and summative assessments for the unit of study.
We will start planning daily lessons, as we discuss the most appropriate learning experiences for each learning target. We will discuss which tasks would have the most impact on student learning, and how we can modify those tasks to best meet the diverse needs of our students.
