Order to integrate suits:
-Games to play with Tiny Polka Dot Cards:
1. How Close to 100? 75? 50?
With four addends, 4 suits
(Students can show their work using the rekenrek. Make sure students are writing all 4 fact families/ number bonds for each set)
-Ex. Start with 35. Show me how far to 100?
35 + _____ = 100
_______ + 35 = 100
100 - _______ = 35
100 - 35 = ________
-Make a compliments of 100 anchor chart as you continue to explore more compliments of 100
-Remember: The students are coming from 1st grade knowing compliments of any multiple of 10
2. Race to 20 or 30 - Start with Making 10, 20, 30, and then 40 at the beginning of the year
(Use 10 sided dice)
Ex. I have 3. What is the compliment of 20?
Ex. I have 9. What is the compliment of 20?
3. Transition to Cuisinaire Rods
Roll a dice, assign a value to each rod, make a key on the board for the students to record down, and fiture out the distance from 20 using the rods
*Remember we can use cuisinaire rods as we explore money as well.
