Qualifications :
Positions on Issues :
Medicare and Social Security
Kara Eastman believes that every American should have the right to healthcare, regardless of income level. Medicare for all would help us finally achieve this goal by keeping healthcare costs in check, allowing medical professionals to make the decisions about our healthcare needs, and making it so families no longer need to deal with rising premiums, huge deductibles, or out-of-pocket costs. Social Security is not an entitlement program – it’s an earned benefit. This is a system that people rely on for their retirement. The cap on Social Security should be raised. Mrs. Eastman wants to solve it by lifting the cap on incomes subject to Social Security taxes. She said if anything, Social Security benefits should be increased, not decreased.
Gun Control
Kara Eastman believes that gun violence is a public health issue that touches all of us. The Second Amendment protects our right to bear arms, but it is “not unlimited” as Justice Antonin Scalia stated in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). We absolutely can and must pass common-sense gun safety regulations–right now. We have to act quickly to protect our schools, churches, and public places, and most importantly, to protect our children. Mrs. Eastman is calling for legislation to include universal background checks, mandatory waiting periods, and the ban on the sale of weapons of war. She has also pledged to reject NRA money, and call on her opponents to do the same. Kara Eastman believes that we must put the safety of our children above the deep pockets of special interest groups.
