Marisa Lopez "Beauty Isn't Everything"
14x8, Acrylic paint on canvas, 2018
The source of my inspiration was pop art and today's society. Pop art is one of my favorite genres of art. The colors and details are one of my favorite things about it. A lot of designs in pop art you may notice is girls crying which is a signature design created in this kind of art. I decided I would like to paint something incorporating that design but putting my own personality into it as well. Today's society is pretty hurtful and people my age are very sensitive now a days because of it. This piece does not look symmetrical because I did not want to make it perfect. People think you have to act and look perfect all the time to be beautiful. Beauty is not everything and I've struggle with not having much confidence and getting over my insecurities and it doesn't help being surrounded by today's society and social media. With the help of art I've grown more confident, and realized that being perfect or being considered pretty doesn't change the fact that you are you for a reason and shouldn't have to change to satisfy others needs.
So I wanted to put that message into this piece. It's okay to not be perfect because it isn't the most important thing in the world. My process was trying to make a lot of straight pointy lines and add a lot of color to brighten up the piece. I did have some difficulties with the black mixing into the lighter/brighter colors. It was also challenging finding colors that worked together since at home I do not own a lot of bright acrylic paint. I think this is one of my most favorite pieces I've designed and created. I like the colors and the white dots I added for the finishing touches. However if I could start over I really wish I would have made the black lines making her chin were thinner to give her a little bit more space of her face.
Marisa Lopez "Music is the color of sounds "
14x8, Acrylic Paint on canvas, 2018
I created this painting because lately I have been relating to music a lot and I wanted to incorporate different types of art like music into visual art which is what I make. I used acrylic paint on canvas and splattered it on as a technique on the piano keys. I used my paint brush and flicked the paint onto the canvas to create a more natural and abstract look. If I could start over I would re paint the words on since they look a little weird with the painting. I do love how the color contrast stands out on the bottom of the painting though.
Marisa Lopez "Palm trees"
14x8, Acrylic paint on canvas, 2019
My style of the drawing is realism. I symbolized peace and calmness with the palm trees. I wanted a color scheme for the background to match the aesthetic of purple in my room. If I could start over I would change the shape of the tree trunks since they are very big. I do however like the white strokes of paint and tree leaves I made with a fan brush.
Marisa Lopez "Colorful Love"
14x8, Acrylic paint on canvas, 2019
My style is abstract/realism. I wanted to symbolize love through art. How certain love and be dull and colorless and other love can be powerful, inspirational, color filled. I would change the shape of the face of the person on the left side. It looks unproportionate and not very unified with the balance. I love trying a new style, abstractism, with the different colors used.
Marisa Lopez "Pop Art Collection"
7x5 , Acrylic paint on canvas, 2019
My style is surreal for these paintings. I am not really giving off a message or symbolizing anything. I just wanted to create something to symbolize pop culture and pop art since it's a style I really liked. If I could start over I would want to clean up the lines and white dots applied. I liked the variety of portraits I created. I really think I am getting better at coloring people but it does not look as realistic but that is a goal I am working on achieving.
Marisa Lopez "Koi"
14x8, Acrylic paint on canvas, 2020
My style I used was realism. I wanted to symbolize peace and nature. How they can simply in the most basic was connect with and through each other. I wanted to paint koi fish since they symbolize good luck or fortune. Balance and peace and good nature. I would change the shading or color detail on the tails to make it more realistic. I do love the detail on the paint I added on the bodies of the fish. I also am very proud of my background getting all the blue contrast to blend together which was one of my big struggles.
Marisa Lopez "Elvis Presley"
11x8, Acrylic paint & Graphite on paper, 2020
My style is realism. My source of inspiration was Elvis. I Have used him as a symbol/figure in my work before for a print making project. I found a really old photograph of Elvis used in a calendar and I said to myself I want to make that, exactly that and I did with few adjustments. I wanted to symbolize him and how he was such an icon during his time and how his music was joyful how his words can be seen as colors and emotions even through black and white dull times his music brightened up society. I would add a pattern to the coat and a bit more shading to the face so the figure is not so bright and plain with white. I am however proud of my shading of the nose and face. I love the chosen background colors and shading of the hands. It was my favorite project I have created so far. I enjoy these combo projects and am looking forward to making more realistic shading portraits.
