Marisa Lopez “Chess”
12x18 Paper, Water Colored Pencils, Hot Glue, Metal, 2018
When I think of chess I think of my grandfather because he used to teach me to play. That will always be special to me. I thought that creating chess pieces out of metal would be a cool idea. I thought and sketched a background that looked really good. The process was very hard for me. A lot of things went wrong and it looked bad for a little while, but eventually in the end it ended up looking okay. I showed that even if something went wrong with my art work I turned the other cheek and worked through it. I came up with different ideas to cover up my messes on the paper for the background. I tried a new coloring technique. For my background, I used water colored pencils to make the color pop more. I like how the black wash showed up in the texture parts of my metal chess pieces I think it turned out really well. I would change using water colored pencils. I think that I just should have used regular colored pencils because when I painted the water on the paper the dark colors spread and went onto the lighter colors which did not please me.
Marisa Lopez “Hermosa Dom y Luna”,
10x8, Photoshop, 2018
The source of my inspiration was the sun and moon (Dom y Luna). They both are big inspirations to art; a lot is created by just using a sun and moon. There are stories about them and in the end, they come together and make peace and that’s what I’m incorporating in my art work. When processing I was questioning what I should make. I was thinking about different designs I could do and the student I sit next to create a moon and sun design for our last project so, I thought I could make a good sun & moon design as well. I was thinking of making something like that. I had a little trouble making clean lines for shadows. If you zoom in you can see they get a little bumpy. I tried to fix them with an eraser tool which help a clean the lines up. Every time something difficult came up that I had to deal with, I stayed positive and tried not to get worked up about it. I tried doing more highlights in places and making them brighter by layering multiple shinning colors on each other. I also tried smudging to make shadows and moon creators. I like how it came out. It looks so pleasingly aesthetic to the eye. I love the different highlights I created all around the piece. There is a lot of unity in my piece and I love how it came out. However, I wish I drew the nose better for the sun. Also, I wish I made a less dull background for something with such a cool focal point/design.
Marisa Lopez “Rosa”
5x 5x 3 1/2, Clay, Glaze, Water Color Paint, 2018
My source of inspiration came from the spring season. It’s my favorite season and Mother’s Day is during spring. I plan on giving it to mi Madre then which is why I painted flowers to represent spring time. My process was fun and difficult. Some techniques I used to created my mug were by making a pinch pot first and adding a handle. To make the pinch pot I made a ball and pushed my thumb through the middle of the ball and pinched in a circular motion until it shaped the cup I wanted. To smooth the outside and inside I took a metal rib and put some slip on it and brushed up from the bottom to the top of the cup. The first cup I made ended up drying when I didn’t want it to so I had to start all over.
It was really difficult to try to recreate it exactly and I wasn’t happy about it but I am now. Painting the cup was also hard because I wanted to make black little details in the flowers which was difficult. I tried using water colored paint on top of the glaze to make the little details which was a creative risk. I like all the colors together. The robin eggs blue it super pretty with the red and I really like how it looks. I think I would have taken a darker green and added brush strokes on top of the grass to give it more dimension and detail.
