Marisa Lopez "Lonely sunset"
12x12, acrylic paint, 2020
I wanted to make my painting 1 art portfolio about mental illnesses and this one represents severe depression. It is a girl on a swing set alone watching the sunset. I used many different sized brushes to make the circles or chains of the swing and for the cloud detailing. I made many pokes and circular motions to create the clouds. For the blending of the background I used a clean small brush to blend the colors in together. I want the audience to think about how even in the light and positivity people can still feel depressed and sad. People struggle with different things and no one could know so it's important to be understanding of everyone. The detailing on the girl was the hardest part for me. From the angle I was painting I had to paint her sitting down. If I started over then I would add more detailing and perspective for her figure. This is a realistic painting to me and I love the clouds and background.
Marisa Lopez "Self awareness"
8x12, gouache & acrylic paint, lead, 2020
My idea was to create a piece that gives people a reminder of their worth. I used little brushes for small strokes for details. After the paint dried I outlined the flowers with a pencil. I also watered down the acrylic to make it move smoother for when I added the letters at the top. I want the audience to think about the work and understand the message because it’s simple and right in front of them that they are enough and should know their worth. The most difficult part was making the colors of the petals the same since I painted different days my exact shades did not stay the same. I would change the background color if I could start over and I wish I would have painted it before I added the flowers. This is also a realistic/abstract art work and I like the color palette of blues I used.
Marisa Lopez "Melancholy Communications"
18x12, acrylic paint, 2020
The artwork is what it is to the audience. There are just 2 figures painted with the same color palette. I saw an artwork similar to this on Pinterest and wanted to put my own thoughts into it to create it to be a more meaningful piece while also being simple. I wanted to use the blue color palette like I have used in a past painting which I really enjoyed. I used small pointed brushes to create the small lines from very careful strokes so then the lines wouldn’t be too bold. I used the technique of repetition for the background and made them into squiggly lines so the colors would represent the feeling of radiating something. The artwork's meaning comes from the audience. Everyone sees things differently and not all art represents what the artist wanted to represent. The thought I had though, was that there are two figures although close together are still not communicating even though they know something is wrong. The figure on the left it looked at as bottling emotions up and the lines/squiggles in between the figures are rays of emotion trying to tell the figure something is wrong. Melancholy communications is the title and it is what represents the painting, the vibes of the painting are calming but also depressing because it wants to communicate that melancholy feeling. This painting although surreal/abstract can be compared to everyday life. Someone may be struggling with something and give off that vibe because of the bottled emotions. The hardest part of the painting was creating the black lines to be symmetrical and stable. Recreating paint colors I couldn’t save was also a challenge but I bounced back by adding the blue color to others in my palette. This art style is abstract and surreal but it is a flat painting. I used cubism to help make up the faces so it would have less of a realistic look. I think it represents that go outside the box, although it is a simple painting I make it have such an under-appreciated meaning behind it. The interpretation of the painting is the biggest part. Famous artists make up the most simple paintings but it is bold in their time because of the meanings behind them. I aspire to bring meaning to people through my art and that is how it is my style of art. Unique.
Marisa Lopez "Gemini"
12x12, acrylic paint, marker, sharpie, led, magazine paper, fake leaves, aluminum, 2021
My idea of work is abstract. Two people are morphed into one person. I saw some artwork similar on social media where an artist made a painting for every single zodiac sign. I first outlined the heads then mixed paint and filled them in. I used sharpie to outline them completely. I then taped on the leaves to the painting and added the words at the bottom. This is still an in progress painting so I am adding more heads and leaves and will add a butterfly in the top right corner. I used hard push down motions to create the green splats on the paper to make a leafy look. I also used a pencil to help shape the butterfly. The artwork is representing the zodiac Gemini. The zodiac is a twin sign so there is a stereotype that all Gemini’s have 2 faces. I wanted to represent that although this is said as a negative thing that there can be beautiful things in that person with their twin energy. The leaves and butterflies represent nature's beauty that the Gemini is shining through. The making of the butterfly was most difficult because it was time-consuming. The overall painting was difficult because I was on a deadline and wasn’t in class for a long time so I couldn’t work on it. I would like to add more detail. The style is abstract/surreal. It’s unique to my style because it's odd and different and a lot of my unrealistic paintings are things thought of from a dream-like reality. I like the color palette.
