Katlyn Wernick "May 25"
9x12, Acrylic Paint, 2019
I knew I wanted my first painting to be a landscape. I also knew I wanted to use my own picture because that is my favorite thing to photograph. I took this picture while walking around Vandeveer park with my family. As I continued through the painting lots of things have evolved but the most none of it would be noticeable if you hadn’t seen the original picture. The main one would be what I chose to keep out of the picture such as the extra details. This painting is an original picture of a landscape I photographed at the Vandeveer park in Davenport, Iowa. If I were to start this painting over I would make the horizon full of trees smaller to make the distance more obvious. I really love the lamp in this painting and i also enjoy the different types of greens I was able to use in this painting.

I always really liked this picture and the night it was taken. I also really like painting landscape type pictures and the horizon in this picture was really cool to me. I want the audience to notice the trees and horizon is the silhouette and the sunset is kind of the main focus of the painting. Everything but the sunset being a silhouette. I think if I started over on this painting I would make the powerline neater but I wanted it to have a certain thin effect. I love the background sunset and the tree on the right bottom corner of it.

I knew for my portrait I wanted to do a picture of my brother but I had no idea what picture. I searched my phone for a good picture of him and eventually found this one that sparked laughter when I saw it. In the beginning, I thought I wanted to paint his facial features but towards the end, I thought it looked really cool without them and still had the same energy. This is a painting of my brother around the age of 4 at our mother’s wedding. The whole day he had refused to smile in any pictures and this one was not an exception. I think to an outsider viewing this painting you would not be able to understand the energy or attitude he was giving but personally, I love that I can look at this picture and know the story behind it. This is the first time I’ve ever painted anything close to a portrait so if I were to redo it I would most likely just make it less messy. The two things I love about this painting is the color of the background contrasting with the subject and the fact that its a funny picture of my brother that I painted.
