"Fruit Slices"
12x 4, Acrylic on cardboard, 2020
After looking through some of the project ideas, I decided I wanted to try something 3D since I usually stick to drawing or painting and chose a cardboard sculpture. I got my idea to do slices of citrus fruit from a painting of orange slices I made in March. I started by cutting out the main pieces of cardboard and gluing those together. Then I needed something to cover some of the seams, so I used pieces of folded-up paper towel to cover those. Then I started painting the sculpture with acrylic paint. After that, I cut out the sections of the fruit from a paper towel and painted and attached those. Finally, I used a white gel pen to make some lines on the sections of the fruit. There isn’t really a specific message I wanted to convey with this artwork. I chose to create fruit slices because I thought they would be something interesting to make out of cardboard. I want my audience to be reminded of a bright summer day when they look at my project. The most difficult part for me was figuring out how to put all the different elements together. I took suggestions from others to improve my artwork. If I started over, I probably would have just done a lemon and orange slice or a lemon and lime slice instead of all three since it took quite a bit of time to finish this project. The style of this piece is pop art. It is unique to my personal style because of the colors and subject matter I chose. I love how vibrant the colors ended up looking.
"Armchair"
Fabric and cardboard, 2021
For this project, I wanted to create a realistic armchair out of cardboard. I knew I wanted to stick with cardboard as my material and started brainstorming ideas of what to create. I thought it would be interesting to make a piece of furniture like a couch or a chair and went with a chair. I started by looking up images of real armchairs to get a general idea of their structure. Then I sketched out the pieces on cardboard and adjusted them as I went. Once I had all of the cardboard pieces, I set them on my fabric and measured how much I would need to cover each piece. I used Mod Podge to attach the fabric to the cardboard. For the cushioned part of the chair, I added pillow stuffing. Finally I attached all of the pieces using glue. My intention with this project was to create something that was easily recognizable and made the viewer think of home/comfort when they look at it. The most difficult part of this project was figuring out the size and shape I needed for each piece. I overcame this struggle by having patience and redoing pieces if I needed to. If I started over I would find the measurements of an actual chair and scale those down so my project was more accurate and precise. The style of this piece is realism. I love the pattern of the fabric I picked.
