Affection

Marry Me by Tier

(February  WINNER)

By the church, you can find him,

For he has been alone for many years.

Grief makes all of his days dim,

He sleeps by her grave every night it appears.

Near the church lies the stone,

All alone, out loud, he reads it.

All way his love was thrown,

There’s no other for him, he admits.

Despair has pierced his heart.

He now goes digging alone,

To see the face he thought

That smiled, and of which he had known.

With his hands he digs deep in the dirt,

To find that of which he had missed so much.

The moon shines down and it heals his heart,

Now seeing her he holds no grudge.

He holds her gently in his arms.

But her skin falls away in pieces,

Though his love for her still burns.

“Marry me?”, with her he reasons.

My Heart and Soul (RUNNER UP)

by Midnight

As the sun rises every day

You’ll be next to me again today

And with the sun comes shine and rain

I know our love will bring us pain

But together we stand against the winds

The aftermath is full of wins

So as you love me, and I love you

I know inside our love is true

An Ode to Roadkill by Julian Sabara

as i stand

on the busiest road in my little town

i stare you in the eyes,

what’s left of you anyways

and i feel,

scared

i dance around your corpse

worried you will twitch at

the sight of me

worried there is some life left

but no,

your lungs hang out of your nose

your back end torn open by the wild

and you will sit there on the pavement

for months to come

still, not life

and i will pass you again tonight,

just before 5 pm

and i will pass you on the way back

to my grandparents house

and you will sit there and stare at me,

thankful i see your beauty,

until the vultures pluck that eye of yours

right out of the skull.

and i love you

The Love Bug by August Arias (RUNNER UP)

don’t chase the beautiful butterflies for they will only flutter away from you

if you wait patiently, within time you might get a glimpse of a few

while you spend your time waiting create a garden to welcome them

grow them a safe home,

a place they’ll want to visit again

it may take a while till you see one flutter by

and it’s okay if u haven’t watched one fly

you can still honor your garden that u made with ur time

one of these days you’ll be lying in ur blissful garden

quietly embedded in your deep harken

and out of the corner of your eye you’ll see a beautiful blue winged butterfly stopping by

The Biker by Bishop.

A man pedals down the street,

His coat

Leaving blurs of corduroy behind him.

His darling

On the bus.

The man drops his bike to the curb,

Running after his lover with everything he has.

The man may be tired,

but his lover will not be left without a goodbye.

The Affection of Love by Anonymous

She believes he will never fully comprehend how he fulfilled her dreams, or how he opened her heart to love and the wonders it can perform. whenever he opens his front door

he will see flowers and cards with his name on them but

Would he recognize these flowers as a gift of how much she loves him, how much she misses him, and the things they usually say to each other, but it is in the way they act to show the affection of love they had for each other? She laughed at the sight of him when they first met. There was love in the air. For her, there was no need to ask for more, but for him, it was too much to bear. Her feelings for him are unforgettable, but only for a short time. She found that affection is nothing more than something made up in her head. The guy she is obsessed over is not real but only a figure of her imagination she loved so hard for each man she met until it was too much for her. She hoped this man would be the one she obsessed over him for months; her affection was too strong. Will she find love again? Will her affection towards someone be real for once? He was the affection taking over her mind and making her go insane.

Three Affection Poems by Casey Yacovelli and Jackie Alvarado

Frustrated

Why can’t I be accepted

Why is your family so affected

Our kids are being rejected

Yes I am from another tribe

But that shouldn’t ruin your pride

The love I have for you is inevitable

And the moments we have are memorable

So our relationship should be irrevocable

Your father shouldn’t get in the way

We are all family at the end of the day

Your father abandoning us

Guilt filling my guts

This situation fills me with anger

It takes me over like a cancer

All I need is an answer

I am what’s best for you

And if your father can’t see that too

The frustration will continue to brew

Disappointment

Why am I such a disappointment

Can I not be happy

With what brings me enjoyment

Because my wife is from another tribe

My father keeps making gibes

My father is disappointed in me

I hate feeling like this

Feeling like I’m lost at sea

I don't know what to do

My head is as wild as a zoo

Good love is all she’s been giving

My father doesn’t understand

Her love keeps me living

I’m not the man he wants me to be

Causing him to turn away from me

Stubbornness

Who does he think I am

Does he think I’m a joke

Why doesn’t he give a damn

Finding out the news

All I can do is refuse

Stabbing me in the back

Marrying a girl from the city

The train is going off the track

                                                       A woman from another village

She’s going to ruin our image

I can no longer sleep

Abandoning my son

I can’t even eat

He’s gone but haunting me like a ghost

Communicating through letters at most

I must demonstrate to him what is right

This is not how I raised him

He’s doing this out of spite

I must fulfill my word

His decision is absurd

Love by Carolina Balcarcel

The distant sounds of birds chirping fill your ears as you lay spread across the grass. Your hands grasp at the greenery beneath you, feeling the blades of grass prick at the palms of your hands. The cool smoothness of it soothes the disturbance like an apology, and after you release it from the tight grip of your fingers you raise your palms to face the gentle sun above you. There’s a cool breeze today, but you hardly feel it from the sun warming your body like a comforting embrace. As you become aware of your surroundings, you turn your head to see your friends sitting next to you, and your ears stray from the sounds of the Earth to hear what they are talking about. They are laughing, you notice, and the sounds fill your ears and hum throughout your body. It’s a happy sound, and as you slowly sit up to stare at the sight in front of you, you notice the crinkles in their eyes and the dimples in their cheeks. They look content and carefree, and you take in the sight with wondrous awe. The stress, the anxieties, all the things you were agonizing over seem to go away. The grip your head had over your heart that had taken over your life so violently and overpoweringly was now a distant memory. You slowly take the grass in your hands again as the breeze makes your hair billow in the wind, and with it your worries. Your friends turn to you, eyes bright and smiling.

“You finally woke up. “ One of them chuckles.

And as you stare at them with wide, disbelieving eyes, you feel your shoulders sagging and a sense of tentative, joyfully welcomed peace washes over you. You had forgotten who you were. You had forgotten the very thing that defined you, the very thing that made you who you were and what made you live how you lived. The singing of the birds, the warmth of the sun, the soothing grass, the loving wind. It all filled you with something. The laughter of your friends, the pure joy emanating from them, the smile on their faces. What was it? You meet your friends’ expectant gazes with a fond look not quite like you, but you didn’t mind letting your facade down for this moment.

“Yeah, “ You sigh shakily, overcome with the sudden surge of emotions inside of you. “I did. “ You tip your head to the side and gave your friends a gentle smile. A smile, you realize. You hadn’t really smiled in ages. And yet here you were, a true grin stretching across your face as a playful expression took over like you never had anything to worry about in the first place. At that, one of your friends lets out a grumble, the other shaking their head fondly, and another rolling their eyes with poorly hidden affection as they all turn their attention away from you for a moment. They start complaining, about how you took a nap while they worked hard to get the picnic ready, about how you apparently snore, about little things that make real, bubbling happiness fill up your chest. It escapes your throat as a bark of laughter. You feel your eyes start to get glassy as you know. You know what it is.

It’s love.

Fondness is Love by William Miranda

Affection, a feeling so warm and true,

A bond that grows stronger, between me and you.

It shines like a light, in the dark of night,

And brings us together, with its gentle might.

Affection is gentle, like a summer breeze,

It lifts us high and sets our hearts at ease.

It whispers sweet nothings, in our ear each day,

And fills our souls with love, in every single way.

Affection is strong, like the roots of a tree,

It anchors us down, and sets us free.

It wraps us in comfort, and holds us tight,

And guides us through life, with its gentle light.

Affection is patient, and always kind,

It never gives up, and never grows blind.

It accepts us for who we are, flaws and all,

And loves us for what we do, both big and small.

So here’s to affection, this love that we share,

A bond that grows stronger, with every single care.

May it always be with us, through all of our days,

And bring us closer, in all different ways.

Affection Inexperience by Dakota Landis

Affection has never come naturally to me

I blame it on the overexposure

I never really know how to convey or accept it

Is overexposure to affection a bad thing?

Does it make you numb?

Will affection ever “properly” be expressed?

Lack of affection can make you seem cold

I hope I don’t seem cold

Why Play the Game?

by Jamie Green-Rost

Affection, is a thing that all people crave, and for what? People say that they want this firey desire to be loved by a destined soulmate, or to be understood by someone. One day you think you find that special someone because they ask you how your day was, or what you're doing at that moment, and you connect with them over time. You lust for the flirt they give off and habromania takes effect, you get lost in the attention, and affection they show you. Over time you become more confident in yourself due to the simple fact that you feel like you’re locked in with your person. This staggering feeling that has been created keeps you up at night waiting for his texts, and his calls. You can’t fall asleep thanks to the thought that you’ll see him tomorrow, and even a glimpse of his smile gives you the hardest butterflies in your stomach. They flutter and you reflect back to how this is the most elated you’ve been in a while. Over time everything stays neutral and you are on cloud nine thinking to yourself that you won. You make plans to go out with him; the excitement fills your body because you have never been so thankful for someone in your life. You get there and your heart drops because you see him with her the one you had fear of in the back of your mind. Those thoughts of him and her back together sitting on all your happiness this whole time, but you push them to the side because of how optimistic you’ve been because he was your weakness. All of the calls, connections, and things you have done together just melt away because he didn’t really care. You’re the one who looks like a fool because you fell too far and hard for him when he didn’t even come close to the emotion you showed to him. The tears start to fall and you call him out later that night he says he wasn’t serious or sure about what he wanted, but you know what you wanted, you wanted to be loved. All the feelings stay with you while he moves on, and you start to struggle because you fell for the affection you’ve craved just like everyone else. The game that no one should play due to the fact you end up with a lacerating ending.

Dear Benjamin by Anonymous

Dear Benjamin

Even though I may not show it

I love you and I want you to know it

You are precious

This love is endless

But do you feel the same?

I watch you down the halls

The remainder of all other focus falls

Needing the grasp of your presence

What is this? Adolescence?

Not a day goes by

Without the thought of you on my mind

I wish I could woo you

Somehow I see right through you

You are genuine

My dearest Benjamin

I love you
