About the Retreat

For the past number of years we have kicked off the Diploma Programme with a two-day, one-night retreat and this year is no different. The theme of our retreat is international mindedness, one of the foundational principles of the IB. As is the case every year, our retreat is an opportunity to build a sense of community and shared vision among our Grade 11 students. To this end, our students will hear from several speakers and participate in a variety of simulations and fun and engaging activities.

One of the aims of the IB is to "develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world" (IB, 2019). In an effort to help our students to share in this vision they will engage in two simulations. One is related to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals while the second is a simulation at Crossroads Foundation where they will have the opportunity to briefly experience and consider the plight of refugees in the world today. We have done both simulations in the past with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Permission Forms

All parents will need to complete and submit the Retreat Permission Form along with the payment.

Parents will also need to download, print, complete a "Refugee Run" simulation permission form. It must be completed prior to attending the activity. Students will not be permitted to participate if they have not completed the form.

Preparation for the Retreat

Aside from an overnight bag, here are a few other items students will need to bring:

  • Laptops will not be required and can be left at home.

  • Mosquito repellant

  • A jacket or sweater

  • Water bottles and umbrellas

  • Most meals will be provided as part of the retreat fee (only dinner on Thursday night is not provided)
