Assessment in the DP
Assessment Calendaring in the Diploma Programme
The Internal and External Assessment draft and final copy due dates for the Class of 2024 can be viewed here.
All students have one Google Calendar where all of their deadlines for CAS, the Extended Essay, homework and formative and summative tasks are posted via Google Classroom.
Students are provided this information regarding how we carry out calendaring in the Diploma Programme and how to manage their calendars at their introductory assembly in Grade 11 and are reminded of this process in Grade 12.
We do not provide a general calendar of all Diploma Programme assessments because we offer over 40 different courses and levels that make a programme-wide calendar untenable.
Parents are encouraged to review this calendar with their son or daughter on a weekly basis.
We aim for students to have no more than two summative assessments on any day though there is occasion where we are unable to meet this for an individual student because of how their timetable is designed.
Students always receive at least seven days notice via their Google Classroom for any summative assessment. Formative work and homework is assigned daily on Google Classroom.
IB Assessment Information
The IBs Guide to Diploma Programme Assessment
The IB grades each course on a 7 point scale based on 3-4 assessments. These descriptors are used to establish the 1-7 grade boundaries
Almost all assessment components are marked using assessment-specific descriptors. From these assessment descriptors, examiners (at the IB level) and teachers (at the school level) choose the description that best represents a student’s work. The IB calls this the “best-fit” approach to grading. Teachers use student performance on individual assessments and the overall grade descriptors (see the 1-7 Grade Descriptors link above) to determine a “best-fit” IB report card grade and a university predicted grade.
The assessment components for each IB assessment are somewhat equally weighted, but for details see the Subject Briefs.
For the World Exams in May of a DP student’s second year, and for the non-examination assessment components sent to the IB in year two of the programme, the IB will use the same best-fit approach for both the exams and assessments to determine what represents a 1, 2, 3, etc. Again, these subject-based Grade Descriptors are located in the link above.
