` My first idea was to draw an anime character that I like a lot and one I relate with, so I chose to draw Shinjis eva from Neon Genisis Evangellion. I thought that this would be the best option because I had recently just finished the show and saw myself in Shinji a lot. I started with pencil and made a rough draft from a photo of the eva, then i colored everything with colored pencil. I chose colored pencil so I could tone it it in spots that needed tone and color lightly on the spots that are lighter. After I finished coloring i outlined all the pencil marks in sharpee and erased all of the pencil marks. On a deeper level shinji and the eva symbolize the struggles of outside pressure on mental heath. Shinji was only 14 when his father told him that he was going to be operating a weapon of war and didnt really have a choice on it. The entire show shinji struggles with the burden of having to pilot the eva while also going through a super emotional time in his life.
The most difficult part of making this project was getting the body porportions right. For my baseline ill expand the eva on the bottom to make the full thing but i cant do that without the bottom looking right so that it looks good when both halfs are together and it was pretty hard to get the body looking right. I would say that this project is non-objective. if you were to just look at it without any knowledge of evangellion you would only see a mech-looking thing, but if you knew evangellion you would instantly notice who it is and have some thoughts on what the meaning of the peice is.
My first idea was something similar with cuba showing two photos one of cuba without US sanctions and embargos and one with showing how horrendus our government can be, instead I chose to do lyiba before and after US intervention. I started with a sketch of what I was thinking on doing and origanally it was gonna be a mixed media collage with more drawing on it but I scrapped that because I found it too difficult to visualize. Instead I put a photo of real modern slavery and overlapped it with two pictures that were taken at similar places one before US bombings and one after. This work highlights the major mistake of the Obama administration. Before US intervention libya was becoming a strong idependant african nation with plans on even starting a national bank for Africa, after libya was left in a state of politcal framentation, state colapse, and civil war. Africa has been and still is being explioted by imperalist nations like the united states and other western nations. The slave trade ended how long ago now? And yet we still take recorces for very cheap keeping people in modern slavery all across the continent, its disgusting. I hope people see this work and ask themselves "What really happened here?"
If I were to put it into a catagory I would probably say that its realistic. All 3 photos are real pictures from libya, one before bombings, one after, and one of a man who would be considered a modern slave, combined all into one work. I like the left side the most. I think everything blends well together.
Our first idea was to have the guy in the middle catching a football and we didnt have any ideas on what to put next. Eventaully we came up with putting the helmet and football on the sides with the lets go sabers in the middle. We started by making the banner purple, outlining with the whiteboard, and painting. Me and Kwaz worked on the football and helmet at the same time and the guy was mostly kwazis work. We made this for the football teams homecoming and now its up in mr criggers room, we showed it to him and he said he wanted it when we got it back. Honestly I struggle with painting in small areas and this was pretty challenging sometimes with all the small places we needed to paint. I really like how the guy turned out, kwazi did a really good job with the face and helmet.
