Chapter 1

In Chapter 1 students will:  

• Model the 10-1 relationship among place-value positions in the base-ten number system

• Read and write whole numbers in standard, word, and expanded form

• Compare and order whole numbers

• Round a whole number to any place

• Add & subtract whole numbers; use estimation to determine if solutions are reasonable

Vocabulary:

• place value – the value of a digit in a number, based on the location of the digit

• digit – any single number; 0-9

• standard form – a way to write numbers by using the digits 0-9 with each digit having a place value

• word form – a way to write numbers by using words

• expanded form – a way to write numbers by showing the value of each digit

• period – each group of three digits separated by commas in a multi-digit number

• addend –  any number used to add

• sum –  the answer to an addition problem

• difference –  the answer to a subtraction problem

• compare –  to describe whether numbers are equal to, less than, or greater than each other

• order –  a particular arrangement or placement of things one after the other

• estimate – a number close to an exact amount

• round – to replace a number with another number that tells about how many or how much

CC.4.NBT.1    Recognize that in a multi-digit while number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.

CC.4.NBT.2    Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.  Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meaning of the digits in each place using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
