Great Utah Award
The Great Utah Award is an optional and supplemental activity designed for students who want to go above and beyond their learning. Some activities require research, while others may require study and memorization. Students will need to make arrangements with the teacher to show completion of each activity and will have until May 1 to complete all the tasks to receive the Great Utah Award. Once completed, the student will be presented with a trophy at an awards assembly at the end of the year.
Label a Utah County Map: All counties must be placed and spelled correctly. This is an activity that requires study and memorization and must be completed on a blank map with the teacher.
Utah Counties and their County Seat: Write each county and its county seat. This is an activity that requires study and memorization and must be completed on a blank page with the teacher.
Research 29 sites/parks on Utah: This includes National Parks, Monuments, Historic Sites, Landmarks, or State Park: The student will choose and read about different parks/sites, etc. of Utah. The student will create a powerpoint on google slides of the 29 chosen and present it to the class. The report should include a picture with a description and location of the area.
Research 1 Utah National Park: Create a tri-fold brochure about the information learned. Present the information to the class. Use the brochure template provided in the packet.
Research 1 influential person of Utah’s history: Write a biopoem about that person. Present the poem to the class. Use the template provided in the packet.
Research 1 Native American tribe or tribal nation of Utah: Create a mural, collage, or poster. Include information on where the tribe lived, lifestyle (nomadic…), foods ate (hunters/gatherers), house they lived in, traditions. Present the poster to the class.
Read Across Utah: Students must read 29 books with at least 100 pages in a variety of genres. The book should be around the student’s Lexile or reading level. Write the title of the book and its genre on the county map. Be sure to take an RC test and write the points redeemed in that county. If your book does not have an RC test, your teacher will have you complete a short report/summary.
Genres include: Nonfiction, Biography, Realistic Fiction, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Sports, Animal Stories (a fictional book with an animal as the main character), Series Books (Read at least two books from the same series; each book counts as one county), Mystery, Humor, Graphic Novel, Poetry, Folklore (Fairy Tales, Tall Tales, Folk Tales), Adventure, Picture Books (Read 4 small picture books to count as “1” 100 page book), Magazine
Answer 29 questions about Utah: Use the study guide provided. This is an activity that requires study and memorization. Student must be able to answer all the questions on a blank questionnaire with the teacher.
29 Math Facts: Complete at least 29 multiplication and division facts each within one minute.
Walk/Run 29 miles: Run or walk at least 29 miles. Record the miles on the tracker.
(Running as part of sports or during P.E. do not count).
