Reading & Language Arts
Language Arts includes oral language and fluency, phonics and spelling, vocabulary, grammar, reading instruction & comprehension, and writing.
Tier I Reading: Into Reading will be used as our central program for reading instruction. Students will identify and learn literary elements, genre characteristics, and determine author's purpose and craft. Grammar practices and opportunities for rich, academic vocabulary learning will be included. Students will practice close reading strategies, use evidence from the text to support their reasoning, make inferences to determine meaning, and analyze main ideas and supporting details in their comprehension.
Spelling: Spelling instruction will be on the first day of the week and practiced throughout the week. Students will have a “cover, copy, check” homework page that is sent home to practice their words. They will also have the opportunity to do extra credit on the spelling words and earn class money. A spelling test will be given on the last day of the week – usually Friday.
Vocabulary: Students will be assigned a set of vocabulary words as part of the Into Reading program. They will practice and use their words throughout the week in class. Students will have an opportunity to do extra credit on the vocabulary words and earn class money.
Grammar: Students will learn the conventions of standard English grammar in usage when speaking and writing.
Writing
Writing: We will use Step Up to Writing tools and Utah Compose to practice and enhance three styles of writing: expository/informational, opinion/persuasive, and narrative. The students will understand the pieces of the Cache writing assessment rubric to guide expectations. Students are encouraged to set a goal of achieving a rubric score of “3” or higher on their writing samples. (Rise scoring writing rubric). Students will be expected to write two-three graded essays in response to a prompt; at least one informational and one opinion.
Science
The State of Utah has adopted K-12 standards based on the latest research in A Framework for K-12 Science Education. These standards will enable students to develop a deeper understanding of science beyond just memorizing facts. Throughout the year, students will begin to form connections between concepts, collect evidence, draw conclusions, and use critical thinking.
Areas of focus for science education:
Plants/Animals functioning in their environment.
Energy Transfer
Wave Patterns
Patterns in the Sky
Social Studies & Health
Students will investigate how Utah’s geography, people, and communities changed over time. We will examine Utah history – the people, events, challenges, and ideas, as well as the rights and responsibilities of the representative government.
Health Education will offer students an opportunity to acquire knowledge, practice skills, and develop attitudes that can benefit them throughout life. We will work to build a solid foundation of good decision-making skills that can contribute to a variety of healthy choices for self and others
