Homework

Homework Newsletter

The students will receive a Homework Newsletter each week.

The left column of the newsletter will contain notes from me, important dates, our curriculum focus, a sticker challenge,  and my contact information. The right column contains math & reading homework, indicates which math lesson we will do each day, has a place for parents to write and sign for the reading homework, contains the spelling words, and has vocabulary words. The back of the newsletter has  optional spelling and  vocabulary activities for extra practice in which the students can earn class money.

20-Minute Reading

Students are expected to read 20 minutes a day or 100 minutes a week.

Please indicate the number of minutes  your child has read on the Homework Newsletter. Students will be expected to read at least 60 minutes a week to be able to shop in class store. Please sign the newsletter by Thursday night. Students will return the HW Newsletter on Friday each week. They must have a parent signature in order to shop in class store.

The newsletter reading log will start with a  “LastWknd” line for the top. Any minutes your child read for Friday or the weekend can be logged on the "Last Wknd" line the following Monday.

Spelling CCC

Each week the students will have a CCC (Cover, Copy Check) to practice their spelling words.

The strategy is for the student to look at the word, cover the word, then write the word. The student checks the word to make sure it is spelled correctly. If the word is misspelled, the word should be crossed out (not erased) and rewritten above or below the word. The last column is to practice writing the word in cursive.

The CCC is attached to the Homework Newsletter. It is sent home the first day of the week and is due the last day of the week. Students must have the CCC completed in order to shop in class store.

Fact Practice

Math fact practice will be practiced and sent home daily (exception of Friday).

Monday - Wednesday the students will be timed for a minute on their recall of math facts. After the timing for each side, we will correct and go over each math fact on the page. The student will finish each side of the page for homework. The better the student can recall facts, the less HW they will need to complete.

The fact sheet is due the next day. Students must have completed and returned the fact sheet on time in order to shop in the class store.
