The violin is the highest and smallest instrument in the string family. It gets the melody a lot in orchestra because its higher sounds can be heard over the other instruments.
The viola is a little bigger than the violin and it sounds lower. Violas often play the harmony parts in the orchestra.
The cello sounds lower than the violin & the viola. The cello is played sitting down and is also bigger than the violin or viola. The cello plays parts that help keep the orchestra together, but sometimes they get the melody of the song as well.
The bass is the lowest sounding instrument in the string family and also the biggest. The bass is the foundation of the orchestra, and helps keep the ensemble together.
We highly recommend renting your student’s instrument through Quinlan and Fabish. Please click the Instrument Rentals page for information about instrument rentals and why we recommend renting through Quinlan & Fabish.
