History: After experiencing loss of students to suicide during his tenure as a high school principal, Dr. Greg Hudnall of Provo, Utah, recognized the importance of positive peer-to-peer interactions. He thought if he could harness peer support, it might work to prevent suicides. Within three years, Dr. Hudnall had implemented HOPE Squads in every school in the Provo City School District-forever changing the district’s approach to suicide prevention. For nine years after the program was implemented, suicides in the Provo City School District dropped to zero.
Campbell County School District: In 2016, Thunder Basin High School was the first to implement a HOPE Squad in their building, with Campbell County High School implementing theirs the following year. We now have squads at Twin Spruce Junior High School, Wright Junior Senior High School, Sage Valley Junior High School, Lakeview Elementary, Prairie Wind Elementary, Paintbrush Elementary, Buffalo Ridge Elementary, Meadowlark Elementary, Pronghorn Elementary, Sunflower Elementary, Rozet Elementary, Wagonwheel Elementary, and Stocktrail Elementary. Conestoga Elementary, Rawhide Elementary, and Hillcrest Elementary will start their squads this year.
Our Mission: HOPE Squads based in our schools aim at identifying, protecting and assisting students in need. Squads consist of peer nominated students approved by staff advisors. Recognition and trust of HOPE Squad members inspire students to freely confide and seek help. HOPE Squads work to change the school culture regarding suicide by reducing stigmas about suicide and mental health and work toward an inclusive school environment.
Curriculum: HOPE4UTAH provides curriculum modules appropriate for all levels of students. The elementary schools focus on wellness, kindness, friendship and resilience. Junior high and high school students also are taught QPR Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Prevention within the curriculum.
