This year you will be studying two texts in translation and two texts originally written in your mother tongue. The aim of this year is to develop your understanding and appreciation of literature both in translation and originally written in your primary language of study. The main focus of your studies this year is to identify and understand the global issues present in the works you have studied and consider how these global issues are presented in works across time and space.
We will begin the course by studying one work in translation as a class. You will read this text in your mother tongue but we will discuss it in English in class. Because this is a mother tongue class, the written work that you do on these texts, will be in your primary language of study. Our lessons on these texts will be supplemented by sessions with your tutor, which will be conducted in your mother tongue.
When we move into your mother tongue texts, you will study these works with your tutor during your scheduled tutor sessions. SSST class time will be split between supervised sessions for you to complete tutor assigned work and class discussions on global issues, upcoming assessments, and general approaches to the study of literature.
We have two scheduled SSST lessons each week. Typically one of these lessons will be for meeting with your tutor or completing tutor assigned work and the other will be a class where we explore texts, assessments and approaches to studying literature. This will vary depending on what we are studying at the time. When we study works in translation or are preparing for particular assessment tasks we may spend both lessons together and when there is a stronger focus on studying mother tongue texts you may use this time to work on tutor assigned work.
You are expected to be on campus and in class for both sessions unless you have made other arrangements with Ms. Zeiler.
SSST lesson schedule is below:
