About: Teaching Diné (Navajo) Language in a predominantly non-indigenous public high school has many challenges. However, the Project-Based Learning (PBL) method is an effective approach when Durango High School students create Diné arts and crafts as the vehicle to learn Diné language. PBL strategies work for indigenous language acquisition because there are similarities to how Diné elders have historically taught language and culture to their children.

About: Appropriate placement of language learners remains challenging for postsecondary world language programs. The Seal of Biliteracy can be used as a placement tool for students in higher education. However, using the Seal for placement can be problematic for a variety of reasons. The present study compared language learners’ proficiency levels in French, Portuguese, and Spanish using valid and reliable proficiency tests at the beginning of their second year of study to their attainment of the Seal of Biliteracy. Findings have implications for world language programs in higher education as they find new ways to place secondary students in their programs.

About: “Why are we even doing this?” “Why don’t we do anything in here?” Questions like these can cause frustration & defensiveness in teachers. Students may not understand the connection between classroom activities & language acquisition esp. when Acquisition Driven Instruction/Comprehensible Input strategies differ from traditional teaching methods. Revealing how activities lead to acquisition & align w/ the Colorado Academic Standards can address these questions & result in buy-in from students. This session will share metacognition strategies used to integrate the Colorado Academic Standards into teaching and strategies to demonstrate to students that they're genuinely acquiring language.

About: This presentation will explore the concept of a spiraling curriculum—a teaching method where key ideas and skills are revisited and reinforced over time. The focus will center on the use of mini units—concise, 10-minute segments dedicated to specific topics—to enhance student comprehensibility. By breaking down complex concepts into manageable chunks and revisiting them regularly, this approach ensures that fundamental ideas and skills remain clear and accessible. The presentation will demonstrate how this method supports differentiation, increases rigor as the academic year progresses, and prioritizes student understanding.
