About: How often do adults claim that after studying Spanish for years, all they can say is "¿Dónde está la biblioteca?" or "Una cerveza por favor"? Teachers hope that students do not have this experience as an objective of language classes is for students to effectively communicate with Spanish speakers in the community and beyond. By intentionally planning with and incorporating high-frequency vocabulary, students’ communication skills can improve, and teachers can accomplish the goal of speaking 90% in the target language. This session will present Acquisition Driven Instruction/Comprehensible Input (ADI/CI) strategies that can be used in working toward these goals.

Resources intended to prepare primarily English-speaking students for these courses have long been available, but such assets for heritage speakers, whose literacy abilities span an entire spectrum, remain scarce. In this session, Popich invites teachers of these courses to engage in collaborative exchange related to this topic.
