The Portfolio
The AP Art and Design portfolios are your "AP Exam" which consists of two sections:
Sustained Investigation
Selected Works
NEW AP STUDENTS: Want to get a head start? Brainstorm topics for your portfolio. You need to pick a topic you can create 15 pieces about that does not get too repetitive. We will work on this the first month of school.. but honestly it is the hardest part of the class. Check out Pinterest and look at our previous students' work to get inspired.
Sustained Investigation
Section 1
15 digital images | 60% of portfolio score
Students will submit images and writing to document their inquiry-guided investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision:
A minimum of 15 digital images that include works of art and design and process documentation.
Typed responses to prompts, providing information about the questions that guided their investigation and how they practiced, experimented, and revised, guided by their questions.
Selected Works
Section 2
5 actual works | 40% of portfolio score
Students will submit works of art and design and writing to demonstrate skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas:
5 physical works or high-quality reproductions of physical works with written responses on paper identifying the materials, processes, and ideas used.
PAY FOR YOUR EXAM
For the AP Exam, you will have to pay for you exam (but trust me, compared to paying for the course in college.. this us MUCH cheaper). I will be adding more information on the costs and procedure for the 2022-2023 AP Exam soon. You MUST pay for your exam by October 1, 2022. If we order your exam in October, and you change your mind about submitting, you will not get 100% of your money back for the exam (there is a $40 restock fee). You can order your exam late by January 1, but it is more expensive.

FEE REDUCTIONS: If you have significant financial need, you may be eligible for a $34 College Board fee reduction per AP Exam. Depending on your state, there might also be additional funding available to supplement the College Board fee reduction and reduce your cost even further. Check with your AP coordinator (guidance office) to find out what support may be available to you.
OTHER COSTS FOR THE COURSE: You may, just like in college courses, have to supply some of your own materials. If you are a painter who needs colors I do not have, you will need to obtain them on your own. Same thing with my digital students- you may need to purchase digital files online to help facilitate your work. It is just a part of the process. Please know that none this is mandatory, however, in the art world buying supplies does make the job easier.
Other costs for photography/graphic design students: At the end of the year, each student is required to print 5 prints and mail them to the college board as part of the exam. You can print in class, but you will have to cover the costs for materials and paper. The average cost is $1 per longest inch (EX: if you print is a 16x20" print... it is $20).
NOTE FROM HARRIS: Again, I know times have money tight and on a strict budget at times, however, paying a small amount to get full college credit is worth it. (Most college courses are between $1500 to $5000 per class. You may spend $250 on this course for supplies and prints, but ONCE you pass, you will be credited the amounts mentioned above depending on the costs of your school you attend).
