Teaching Ideas

Students could be learning through:

  • discussing and/or labelling photographs of their whānau

  • talking about whakapapa, creating a family tree

  • asking questions about relationships indicated in classmates’ family trees

  • Completing information-gap activities.

  • Work done on whakapapa (geneology) can be paired with work done on pepeha to create a mihi: Example of student pepeha + mihi:

Who are your grandparents? John and Marama are my grandparents.

WAIATA: Basic Pronouns: ahau, koe, ia - I, You, He/she

ahau - I, me

koe - you

ia - he/she


Ko au, ko au tēnei - This is me

Ko koe, ko koe tēnā - That is you

Ko ia, ko ia tērā - That is (him/her) over there

Kei te mahi ngā mahi - all busy working. (Lit: They are doing the work).

This story introduces the concept of a family tree.

Toku Whakapapa - my family

This is a worksheet for students to complete their family tree if you don't want them to draw their own. Sections (like the tupuna sections) could be cut off. Siblings could be added to the bottom.

This could be assigned as homework to be done with whanau at home and then brought back.
