Over the summer term class 3 has really enjoyed lots of learning focussed around food! We have been designing, making and decorating biscuits in DT, learning some basic french phrases for ordering food, culminating in a great fun French Cafe, with the opportunity to taste lots of well-known french delicacies. We have also been learning about the processes of life of plants and animals and how nutrition is essential for life in all living things.
Our Science focus has also been around classification and we have been exploring how living things are classified with a specific focus on branching databases. This also took us into the realm of food and some children were very surprised to find out that many foods they considered to be vegetables (due to their savory nature) were in fact fruits! We really enjoyed looking closely at our plant-based foods and deciding which parts of the plant we eat and using our careful observation skills to make detailed drawings of plants and animals.
We even thought about food in our literacy as we considered the plight of the poor lost bear, stranded on Bear Island with no other polar bears and in need of human help in the form of April and her father to help him survive. The children wrote some excellent diary entries with their own ideas for how they could help bear.
All in all, this has been a fab fun-filled, hard-working and tasty term. Well done class 3. Enyor your summer break, you've definitely earned it!
What an action packed term at Cawood Primary.
Our science focus on living things and their habitats led us straight outdoors to explore the living things in our beautiful school grounds. We explored what makes a thing ‘living’ and discovered Mrs Nerg....ask someone in class 4 for an explanation! We followed in the footsteps of the early scientists Carl Linnaeus and Charles Darwin and tried to create our own classification systems using branching data bases….it was quite tricky! We dissected flowers, labelled our diagrams and thought about how plants reproduce. The plant kingdom is fascinating. We rounded our science learning off by looking at lifecycles, particularly in insects and amphibians and we did some amazing scale drawings available to view in the KS2 corridor. We also created some amazing wildlife habitat pavilions in Design Technology, demonstrating our making skills as well as team work and cooperation.
In literacy we continued the animal theme and investigated animals that were once abundant in the UK but sadly struggling to survive. We looked at the re-wilding projects introducing beavers back into UK habitats and the advantages and disadvantages that this brings. We researched the Eurasian Lynx and wrote our own balanced arguments for the notion of re-wilding the lynx into the Scottish glens. We had very mixed opinions….not surprising in our rural farming community!
Health and well-being week is always a blast and Class 4 enjoyed all the activities from martial arts to smoothie making, as always huge thanks to Mrs McKee for planning an exciting week, support staff and Miss Edwards for executing a fun packed week.
Finally it was great fun supporting our Year 6 children in the Key Stage Two performance of Annie Junior. We helped to create the scene of New York with our class dance and of course helped raise the roof with our fantastic singing.
A super year Class 4….An absolute delight for Mrs Walker and Mrs Kelly, we can’t wait for next year’s learning adventures in Class 4 (but we’ll have a rest first!)
What an amazing term to end the year! Where to start? From working hard when revising to finally sitting the SATs papers (which seems a long time ago) to, the highlight of the year, the end of year show - Annie. We have enjoyed every minute up until saying a final goodbye to the Year 6s.
This term we have enjoyed researching and creating a 3 course meal in DT. Each group split into pairs and each pair made either a starter, main or dessert. The starters ranged from ratatouille to a salad. The mains ranged from burgers to meatballs and the desserts ranged from pancotta to cheesecake. We enjoyed trying the meals as much as making them.
We also enjoyed reflecting on the year when writing the end of year reports. It made us realise how many amazing activities we have taken part in as well as reflecting on what we are most looking forward to about next year.
The year 6s have loved the journey the Archbishop Young Leaders award took them on and relished completing the challenges set. We wish them all the best in high school!
