Training

TRAINING

Rowers and coxswains will typically train up to six times a week with a combination of water and land training. Training will mostly occur after school between 4:00pm - 5:30pm. All training sessions, whether on or off the water, will normally be on rain or shine unless you are notified otherwise by your coach.

Rowers and coxswains should bring enough clothing, shoes, food and water to cover all eventualities, as it can at times get very cold and wet out on the water. Full commitment to attend every training session is essential, as is arriving at training sessions on time.

If one rower or coxswain is absent from training (without giving notice), it is unlikely that the entire crew will be able to train. Every member in a boat has a crucial role to play and a crew is let down if rowers are missing – it is not like netball, rugby or hockey where crew members can still train fully if team members are absent.

Training schedules may change throughout the season, however, it is always well communicated in advance, with a start and finish date. This information is communicated through our private Facebook page called Cashmere High School Rowers.

LAND TRAINING - Land based training is at Te Whare Rēhia - Fitness and High Performance Centre at Cashmere High School. We have a number of ergs and weights available and are privileged to work alongside a qualified strength and conditioning trainer.

WATER TRAINING - We are privileged to be associated with Canterbury Rowing Club for our water training at Kerrs Reach, Kerrs Road Wainoni. Rowing on the Avon allows the rowing squad 2000m of water for their training. When cycling after school to training, students are expected to wear their helmet, hi-vis vests and obey all road rules.
