Coxswain

The coxswain, also called the cox, is in charge of the crew of the boat. The cox steers the boat and has a feel for what the crew needs and a good view of technical errors. The cox needs to translate the coach's concerns into practical calls. 

A cox must be positive, a good motivator and have strong interpersonal and leadership skills to be successful.

The coxswain is also coach's assistant and they are responsible for crew safety. A positive coach-coxswain-rower relationship, where everyone is working together at all times is key. Rowers are required to follow the instructions of the coxswain.
