Objectives• To appreciate the value of persisting in life situations.• To use persistence to solve a problem or deal with a challenge that doesn’t have an easy or obvious answer.• To identify an area where students want to persevere.

INSTRUCTION:

Check-In/Hook:

1. You are stranded on a deserted island. What one thing do you hope to have with you?
2. Clip set-up: Chuck Noland is the only one that survived an airplane crash somewhere in the remote Pacific Ocean. He makes his way to shore and begins the task of trying to survive in this new and threatening environment. He determines that coconuts contain liquid that might sustain, so he sets about trying to get at the water inside the coconut.

Discussion/Practice:
1. How did Chuck demonstrate persistence?
2. How did his persistence pay off?
3. What would have happened if he had not persisted?
REFLECTION:
1. Share a scenario where you did or needed to show persistence.
2. Listen to the sweet sounds 1970s Soul Train and believe that whatever the challenge, it really is going to get easier. Persistence.
