Humor is an intrinsic part of what makes us human. It’s there when we’re getting together with friends and also there in the most unexpected, awkward moments of life. So, in learning, we might use humor to make situations relatable or to ease tension.

Humor makes the world go around. But it’s not always easy to find. We all go through challenges in our lives and before COVID-19, we were no doubt experiencing some of this. Maybe we suffered a job loss, challenges at home or school, or are dealing with a health concern. Perhaps we just broke up with someone or had a fight with a friend. This is life and we’re all in it. The events of 2020 just makes everything more intense.

On a global scale, we've witnessed hardship and suffering. And the flip side is, we are also witnessing empathy, compassion, joy, and giving. People are volunteering where they can, reaching out to those in need, supporting those they love. A lot of good is happening. The vernacular is “we’re in this together.” We need to see the good moments to shine the light. Consequently, humor goes a long way right now.

As we reflect on the past year and look to the year ahead, what have you learned about yourself and your ability to persevere?

What part might humor play in developing perseverance?

Keep laughing! It's good for you.

Laughter strengthens the immune system, activates the brain's dopamine reward system, and stimulates goal-oriented motivation and long-term memory

Positive & Negative Humor

Not all humor is equal. Humor can be used to flatter and encourage. It can also be used to hurt.

How can you use positive humor help those around you?
