The Open Mic strategy is a zero prep and high engagement strategy for all children, and can be planned for or utilized on the spot as a "teachable moment". This strategy is especially geared towards gifted and high achieving students. The Open Mic strategy allows students to debate certain topics relevant to their units of study. Students can either team up or debate topics individually, depending on the lesson or topic. Students pick a side of a topic and take a few moments to research and prepare their argument/evidence to defend their side. Classroom microphones can be given to the students to increase interest and engagement and as an activity management tool- allowing students to only speak when they have the microphone, which the teacher has in their possession. Colored desk lights may also be used during this activity- when the light is green, the student (s) have the floor to speak while their opponent's light is on red. IF students speak while their lights are on red, they are disqualified from the activity. This strategy works to enhance student's speaking, listening and critical thinking skills.
*Communication(the debate against their opponent)
Collaboration (working with teammates to research and prepare their argument)
Critical Thinking (preparing arguments)
Creativity (learning beyond the content standard and using this knowledge to prepare and deliver their debate)
