HISTORICAL ASPECTS - IIS CARAFA GIUSTINIANI

The headquarters of the “Marzio Carafa – Nicola Giustiniani” Higher Education Institute stands on the remains of the ancient Palazzo Ducale of Cerreto Sannita of the noble Carafa di Maddaloni family, counts of Cerreto from 1483 to 1806. The building belonged before to the Episcopal Curia and then to the provincial administration of Benevento and, during the 1980s, it was involved in a massive expansion project. It currently represents one of the most modern school buildings in the Samnite province with large classrooms, cutting-edge laboratories, green spaces, a vast auditorium and a fully equipped gym. It hosts the classes of Administration, Finance and Marketing, Corporate Information Systems, Construction, Environment and Territory, Informatics and Telecommunications and the Music High School classes.

Marzio III Carafa (Maddaloni, 1650 – Naples, 1703) – after whom the Institute of Higher Education of Cerreto Sannita is named – was the seventh Duke of Maddaloni and the tenth Count of Cerreto Sannita. Marzio Carafa, together with his brother Marino Carafa and the bishop Giovanni Battista de Bellis, played a decisive role in the reconstruction of Cerreto Sannita ex novo, capital of the superior county of Carafa, according to a project drawn up by the regio engineer Giovanni Battista Manni, following the earthquake of 5 June 1688. The palazzo ducale of Cerreto is chronologically and contextually further from the construction of the first palaces of the noble Carafa family of Maddaloni

Cerreto, in fact, destroyed like most of the neighboring towns, following the earthquake of 1688, was rebuilt in just eight years at the behest of the Duke of Maddaloni Marzio Carafa, according to an innovative project which presented a series of blocks each intended for different functions. The palazzo ducale of Cerreto was one of the first palaces to be built at the end of 1690, that is, just two years after the earthquake. It was sold by Doctor Girolamo Pelosi, general agent of Duke Marzio Carafa, to Doctor Giovan Domenico d'Adona.

How many times have we walked through this door and not seen this date? It probably indicates the construction of the admission because it was not always like this. If we see the photo below from 1907 we can see the prevalence of the arches on the openings as architectural elements, therefore indicating a different era of construction compared to the square door we see today. Where today we see the window that looked onto the cloister was the entrance door to the ducal palace. Naturally the new structures have tried more and more to get closer to the architectural style in the interiors, but on the outside we can only see squared architectural elements because they belong to a different architecture. The expansion of the structure took place through a translation of the entrance. In this way entering it will be even more suggestive!!!!!!!!
