LEED CERTIFICATION OF IIS Carafa Giustiniani
LEED CERTIFICATION OF IIS Carafa Giustiniani
A green or sustainable building is a building that, because of its construction and features, can maintain or improve the quality of life of the environment in which it is located. To do this, it is essential to achieve a high level of efficiency: reducing the consumption of energy, water and other resources minimises pollution. The LEED certificate (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the internationally accepted official recognition that establishes whether a building deserves to be considered sustainable. Our school meets most of the points of the LEED certification. We tried to recreate a real certification, through observation.Every detail of the school has been considered in seeking sustainability. Going to give indicative values for each parameter considering the actual condition. For each parameter there was a complete description of the analysis of each parameter of the LEED certification. When describing the analysis of each parameter of the LEED certification, it's essential to be thorough and specific. By providing a comprehensive overview of these parameters, you can demonstrate the school's dedication to creating a healthy, resource-efficient learning environment..Our school scores 81 points, see the final scorecard.

LOCATION AND TRANSPORT
The IIS “CARAFA-GIUSTINIANI” has a central position between the Telesina Valley and the Titerno Mountain Community. Our institute is not located in an environmentally sensitive place as it is located in the urban area of the town, and does not harm the habitat of the species present in the Titernina area. Our school can be reached very easily and in the shortest time possible via provincial and state roads using public transport such as buses which reduce the use of private cars, clearly reducing the environmental impact. The public transport network that connects our school is very extensive, as it can accommodate students from the Telesina Valley to Titerno and also from Volturno from towns such as Castel Campagnano. In front of our school there is a charging station for electric cars.
They can be used by anyone, but they are also an incentive to use electric cars for those who go to school, if they are teachers, adult students, ATA staff and many other members of the school. Although there is space for two cars, it helps to reduce the impact of cars on the environment with a consequent reduction in pollution due to car exhaust. The column has two sockets.
SUSTAINABLE SITES
Our school has a strong connection with nature and the natural habitat, in fact in recent years numerous trees of various kinds have been planted in events such as "M'illumino di meno" and for "Earth Day". In so few years we have managed to increase the quantity of trees around our school in a small way. But for years our garden-parking lot has been adorned with pines, conifers and olive trees and some exotic plants. (If we go outside I see types of plants). Furthermore, given the location of our school we are able to maintain a strong contact with Northern nature, we have the view on the slopes of Mount Erbano and to the south on the lush Cerreto hills which maintain an interconnection with nature.
EFFICIENT USE OF WATER
The water footprint of our institute can be improved by maintaining constant maintenance of the water system to avoid leaks that could cause a waste of water. Furthermore, the main consumption of our school is hygienic-sanitary consumption of the company that manages the Cerreto Sannita aqueduct system maintain the aqueduct system in the best possible conditions.
ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE
In our institute we try to reduce energy consumption starting from the contribution of students and teachers. We avoid turning on the lights when we can take advantage of the sunlight, we avoid opening the windows when the heating is on, we turn off PCs and IWBs when we are not using them. Furthermore, our structure is equipped with fixtures that prevent heat loss during the days winter, and if there are drafts they are repaired to avoid dispersion. Our school is partly equipped with a photovoltaic system on the roof of our gym for energy supply, while for heating it is equipped with a gas boiler.
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES
Regarding the recycling system, our school is quite discreet as in each class there is a bin for undifferentiated waste. In the laboratories, particularly in the CAT laboratory, we have several bins where separate waste collection is carried out for paper, plastic and non-recyclable material. Having separate waste collection for each class certainly involves expenses and is probably not always carried out correctly by everyone within a large community like the school one .
INDOOR AND ENVIROMENTAL EQUALITY
The quality of the space in our school can be seen both in the old structure and in the new structure assuming an optimal level. In the old structure (CAT and presidency side) the quality of the space, despite initially not being used as a school environment but as a monastery, has been adapted over the years starting from the 1960s, the quality of the classrooms and the structure has always improved further improving with fire prevention systems, railings suitable according to current regulations, panic doors and many other elements that characterize our structure. In the new structure built as a school environment we have several more cutting-edge spaces with an auditorium that allows you to organize training meetings and school assemblies, and an easy-to-reach internal gym.
In the school classrooms there are air regenerators for allergies to dust and pollen, to help reduce the spread of viruses and preserve the health of people present in the school premises, furthermore, to remove air pollutants. There are smoke detectors and fire systems 'ready to report and help in an emergency.Regarding thermal control, it is not possible to adjust the temperature of the radiators based on the temperature of the building. While regarding noise pollution, our school distinguishes traffic despite the importance of the road and the presence of construction sites and pets, it has low noise pollution ranging from 10 to 100 dB due to surrounding conditions, very low noise pollution. They can be used by anyone, but they are also an incentive to use electric cars for those who go to school, whether they are teachers, adult students, ATA staff and many other members of the school. Although there is space for two cars, it helps to reduce the impact of cars on the environment with a consequent reduction in pollution due to car exhaust. The column has two sockets.
DESIGN INNOVATION
Our school thanks to the numerous European PNRR funds to aim for a Next Generation school, always in step with the times. Cutting-edge digital classrooms and laboratories aimed at sustainable development on all economic, social and environmental levels. The 10 digital classrooms in our school: painting, cutting-edge digital whiteboard and a blackboard with markers and tablets available for the class. Classrooms identified by a plaque applied inside the classroom and a different painting with green and blue colors that give calm and tranquility in the eyes of the student and the teacher, blackboards that allow fluid teaching within everyone's reach and tablets to have integrated digital teaching which in their complexity guarantees sustainability at a social, economic and environmental level.
The laboratories of our school will soon also become Next Generation laboratories which will be the protagonists of a completely new school methodology. For example, the current language laboratory will be transformed into a 200 m2 Next Generation Laboratory divided into six areas:
EXCHANGE: where you can work in a group and discuss.
PRESENT: an area where you can present works, watch films and much more.
INTERACT: an area equipped with many stations where you can write, speak and use technological means.
DEVELOP: an area perfectly dedicated to dialogue and the development of educational and training ideas and speeches.
INVESTIGATE: an area dedicated to finding and analyzing a requested task equipped with a multimedia touch table to be able to interact directly with the material.
CREATE: an area dedicated exclusively to the use of one's creativity where students can produce digital and photographic materials directly.
In addition to the language laboratory, the CAT laboratory and Fazenda are also ready to become Next Generation laboratories.
