Jazz Ensemble

Students must audition to participate in the ensemble. Audition information and materials are made available in October for a mid-November audition. Members of the Jazz Ensemble sax and brass sections must also be enrolled in Concert Band, Wind Ensemble or Orchestra. Most jazz ensemble players also participate in the Titan Regiment.

Over the past several years the Tesoro Jazz Ensemble has enjoyed tremendous success. The band has won numerous awards at local Jazz Festivals including 1st place awards at the Irvine High School Jazz Festival and First place at both the Trabuco Hills and San Clemente Jazz Festivals. In 2009 the band earned a top ten finish in the 4A division at the Reno Jazz Festival. The Jazz Ensemble plays big band compositions and arrangements in a variety of styles including; swing, blues, bebop, ballads, funk, rock, and Latin. Members of the ensemble work to develop proficiency in jazz phrasing and improvisation techniques. We will also explore some of the historic periods of Jazz History and its artists and influences. The Jazz Ensemble class meets only during the second semester as a zero period class. The band is made up of alto, tenor and baritone sax, trumpets and trombones; and a rhythm section that includes piano, electric and acoustic bass, guitar, drum set and vibraphone/percussion.
