Nightly Reading Logs will change this year....don't get too excited.....
Our ELA team is looking to mesh 4th grade and 6th grade ideas for better transitions in 5th grade. We are looking at having the students read a book a month (or so) and submit a culminating project that will be graded.
HOWEVER, your child is expected to read CONSISTENTLY and will be graded in doing so. We teach reading strategies in class and EXPECT them to be practiced with their independent books. Just because the nightly log is gone doesn't mean the reading is too.
I am always looking to see that progress is being made. So throughout their reading, I will check and grade that they are applying learned strategies.
HERE'S THE CHANGE- Although parents are not required to initial a reading log nightly, I will monitor reading within the classroom. I will do this using a STATUS of the CLASS sheet where I ask the students about their books once a week. At first the dates will be announced and later unannounced. In addition, I will conduct one on one reading conferences asking your child about what they are reading. This process WILL BE GRADED and the grade will be reflected at the end of the nine weeks on their report card. Parents- You are encouraged to monitor your child at home. They should be reading consistently but ultimately I am a watching them from school.
