How are we ensuring clean buildings and space?
CCS staff will work to clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces (e.g., playground equipment, door handles, sink handles, drinking fountains) within the school and on school buses at least daily and between use as much as possible. Use of shared objects (e.g., gym or physical education equipment, art supplies, toys, games) should be limited when possible or cleaned between use.
CCS will educate students and staff about best health practices, social distancing, self health checks, and personal hygiene.
What is social distancing (as defined by the CDC and VDH and adopted by CCS)?
maintaining 6 feet of physical separation
maintaining 3 feet of physical separation on the school bus with mandated face mask use
maintaining 10 feet of physical separation for extracurricular activities
How will schools plan to social distance students and staff?
Schools will space seating/desks at least 6 feet apart.
If possible, desks will face in the same direction.
Schools will limit transitions.
Assign seats to create distance between children on school buses – one person per seat unless immediate family member.
What if it is impractical or impossible to social distance?
Students and staff will practice social distancing; however, we recognize there are times when staff must be within 6 feet of a student. In these cases, both parties should wear masks and work to separate as quickly as practical.
Will students have to wear a mask?
Updated November 17, 2020-
On November 13, 2020, Governor Northam amended Executive Order 67 and Executive order 63. These actions increased restrictions on private and government activities in response to increased Covid-19 transmission rates throughout the Commonwealth. Executive Order 63 requires that all individuals age 5 and older wear a cloth face covering, as described and recommended by the CDC, inside buildings. This will require that our students and staff always remain masked while inside their school.
There are several exemptions to mask use:
· While eating or drinking.
· Individuals exercising or using exercise equipment.
· Any person who is playing a musical instrument, when wearing a mask or face covering would inhibit the playing of the instrument (e.g., wind instrument), if at least 10 feet of physical distancing can be maintained from other persons, whether the rehearsal or performance is indoors or outdoors.
· Any person who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the face covering without assistance.
· Any person seeking to communicate with the hearing impaired and for which the mouth needs to be visible.
· When temporary removal of the face covering is required to receive educational services.
· Persons with health conditions or disabilities that prohibit wearing a face covering. Adaptations and alternatives for individuals with health conditions or disabilities will be considered whenever possible.
· Staggered short term mask breaks are allowed.
Campbell County Public Schools will teach and encourage students to implement this order and will continue to promote hygiene and physical distancing daily to decrease the spread of Covid-19
6. What will a school do if they have a positive case of COVID-19? (Updated 9/6/20)
CCS will close the school or impacted classrooms depending upon the nature of each situation and notify the school community of the closure.
CCS will notify the VDH of an initial contact tracing result.
CCS will contact families of affected individuals and advise them to quarantine or isolate.
VDH will also notify persons when they need to quarantine and/or isolate. CCS and the VDH will not release the names of infected individuals to the public.
The school will clean and disinfect possible areas of contamination.
The school will work to ensure continuity of education during the building closure.
7. How are we screening students and staff?
It is imperative that parents conduct a daily health screening with their student before allowing the student to report to school. While at school, students will be monitored for symptoms of COVID-19 and sent home if they are ill. Symptoms include:
Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Students who are ill at home for an extended period of time should see their healthcare provider.
CCS staff will perform a self-screening utilizing the above criteria prior to reporting to work and will monitor their students for symptoms of COVID-19.
8. What happens if a student becomes sick at school?
Students who become sick at school or exhibit the above symptoms will be sent home and asked to stay at home until symptoms subside. If symptoms continue for an extended period of time, parents are urged to call their healthcare provider. For the safety of our school community, parents must not send sick students to school.
9. What is the difference among the ‘phases’ for my child’s school?
In general, Phased Guidance requirements are:
Phase I: In-person services may be provided for special education programs in cases, where all parties agree, it is appropriate. During any in-person instruction, social distancing guidelines must be adhered to. Instruction during Phase I is primarily remote, and no extracurricular activities are permitted.
Phase II: In-person services may include Special Education services, as well as Pre-K-3 instruction and English Learners. Summer camps may be held in buildings where strict social distancing measures are in place. During this phase, most instruction remains remote. Athletic and other extracurricular opportunities may be accessed with strict social distancing guidelines in place. General guidelines for this phase are
6-feet of physical separation at all times for academic activities and
10 feet of physical separation at all times for extracurricular activities
50 person limit on all gatherings
Spaces receive disinfection between uses.
Phase III: In-person services are permitted for all students with strict social distancing measures in place. During this phase, instruction includes more in-person delivery. Remote instruction will continue to supplement in-person instruction to meet social distancing guidelines such as
6-feet of physical separation at all times in schools
3 feet of physical separation with mandated face mask use
10 feet of physical separation at all times for extracurricular activities
Spaces receive disinfection between uses.
10. Are schools conducting temperature checks? (updated 8/17/2020)
Yes, schools will conduct temperature checks of all students and staff.
